Box Office: 21 Fatboys and a Superhero
Filed under: Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Box Office Predictions, War
1. Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who: $24.5 million
2. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns: $20 million
3. Shutter: $10.4 million
4. Drillbit Taylor: $10.3 million
5. 10,000 B.C.: $8.9 million
Four new flicks going into wide release, with the movies being divided equally between comedy and drama.
21What's It All About: A young man in dire need of money to pay for his education at M.I.T. takes part in a well-organized card counting ring with a fool-proof method for winning at blackjack. Based on a true story.
Why It Might Do Well: The combined cool factor of having Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne in the same movie may make some people curious.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Rottentomatoes.com is giving this one a lackluster 54%, and personally watching people play cards bores me to tears.
Number of Theaters: 2,500
Prediction: $17 million
Run Fatboy RunWhat's It All About: In a film directed by David Schwimmer, Simon Pegg stars as a man trying to win back the woman he left at the alter five years ago by competing against her current beau in a marathon.
Why It Might Do Well: Pegg was sheer genius in Shaun of the Dead, and he's joined here by Dylan Moran, one of his co-stars from that film, as well as the often hilarious Hank Azaria.
Why It Might Not Do Well: The relatively small release will keep this one from pulling huge numbers.
Number of Theaters: 1,050
Prediction: $9 million
Stop-LossWhat's It All About: Ryan Phillipe plays a soldier recently returned from the war in Iraq who is ordered back to the front lines, and his loyalty to his country, his family and himself are all called into question.
Why It Might Do Well: A 75% rating at Rottentomatoes.com is encouraging.
Why It Might Not Do Well: This movie, of course, deals with a very real Army policy which may keep away those looking for more escapist fair.
Number of Theaters: 1,200
Prediction: $7 million
Superhero MovieWhat's It All About: Parody of recent superhero movies, with particular emphasis on the Spider-man films.
Why It Might Do Well: As much as people (myself included) bemoan the existence of these spoof flicks, the 300 parody Meet the Spartans pulled in $18 million on opening weekend and to date has made $59 million worldwide, so people are paying to see them.
Why It Might Not Do Well: If the movie-going public finally says "hold, enough," but I don't see that happening.
Number of Theaters: 2,700
Prediction: $19 million
None of this week's releases say "blockbuster" to me, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Horton Hears a Who hang onto the top spot for a third week. Here's how I think it will break down:

Post your predictions for the top five movies in the comments section below before 5:00PM on Friday (and it occurs to me that I've never specified a time zone before, but that should be Eastern). One point for every top five movie correctly named, two points for every correct placement, and one extra point for the top movie.
