Spike Lee's 'Miracle at St. Anna' Trailer

After the whole Spike Lee vs. Clint Eastwood kerfuffle, it's great to finally see a glimpse of Lee's new World War II movie, Miracle at St. Anna. The trailer for the film has just shown up on Yahoo! and it looks just as great as I'd hoped it would. Of course, it's difficult to tell the quality of a war movie based on its trailer -- war movies from Hollywood typically all look the same at the marketing stage -- but I have a strong feeling this will at the very least be one of the more interesting war movies we've seen in some time. Coming from the unique perspective of Lee, we're hopefully bound for some things we haven't even seen before. I like that the trailer begins in a bank that kinda resembles the one from Lee's previous feature, Inside Man. And that it takes a moment to reveal that it's a war movie. I guess now that we see Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role more clearly (he's not even listed on the film's IMDb page), it seems as though St. Anna may involve more of a present story than I had expected. Perhaps his interview with the main character, Hector (Laz Alonso), will be interwoven with the story, like the interrogation sequences of Inside Man? Nah, Lee would never repeat himself so blatantly, would he?
The Miracle of St. Anna marches into theaters September 26.

When Lee's comments first came out, the first thing I thought was "I wonder if Spike Lee's got a movie coming out?" I didn't realize it was going to be a war movie. What's next? More Lee/Tarantino beef once Inglorious Bastards finally comes out? This is getting silly. I hope Eastwood hits the studio and puts out a diss track.

I read "Miracle at St. Anna." It is a poorly written book full of silly historical errors. The publishers must have been in a hurry to take anything McBride had after the success of the "Color of Water."

What could Lee possibly bring to a War film that's of a "unique perspective" besides the obvious reversal of soldier's races? The characters Lee will bring out are the same one's he puts in all his movies; bitter blacks copping attitudes with not a lot to say.

Actually, McBride meant his novel to be upbeat and positive, a testament to the power of faith. Unfortunately, the plot is pretty ludicrous, and the details garbled, so it does not come off as well as it might have. This movie will NOT be what people expect.

To johnjon, its funny that you say that this movie doesn't bring anything unique to the table. Name a War movie that hollywood has put out that talks about blacks being in the war history books. None!!! other then "Glory". Because everyone nose that blacks had no roles in WW1 or WW2 right? Give Me a Break!!!. This movie is going to be ground breaking because it has never been done in hollywood before. This movie will set the bar on war movie and how blacks are portrayed in historic movies for now on. Mark my words Lee will will an Oscar for this one. You can bet that. O and yes being deprived for 400 years would make you a little bitter don't you think? Racism still exist in this country. you just can't wish it away. Spike Lee brings race from the perspective of a black male. Because you and I both know that Hollywood doesn't tackle these issues. They run from it. Thats the problem.

Fred, I suspect that you were in a hurry to read "Miracle ..." and bypassed "Author's Note," in which the first sentence states,
"This book is a work of fiction inspired by real events and real people." I hope you all will go see it rather than continue to doubt its unique perspective. Personally, I am excited about relating my father's 1945-46 stint in Germany during World War II to that of the men of the 92nd Infantry.

Another movie containing blacks in War...let's see...Men of Honor and Tuskegee Airmen quickly come to mind.
But because race is a HOT topic in America right now, this movie is well timed and will do well with critics and fans alike. I don't know if he'll win the Oscar (the Academy won't look highly on his public dispute with Eastwood) but he'll atleast be nominated.
I'm looking forward to it.

No, I read it carefully. Too bad McBride did not send a copy of the manuscript to the sources he cites; the details would not have been as garbled as they were. This is a work of historical fiction, so the author, who does claim to have done some research, has a responsiblity to get some basic facts right,which he doesn't. The effect is sloppy and appears ludicrous to anyone with any knowledge of the historical events depicted.
